This site lists toll free numbers of nationwide hotlines where someone is available to talk or give a referral to a local agency. Many operate 24 hours a day; seven days a week.

American Association of Health Plans
This link should be of special interest to counselors in private practice. The American Association of Health Plans is the national trade association representing more than 1,000 health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, point-of-service plans, and other similar health plans that care for more than 140 million Americans. AAHP represents its member plans on a broad array of issues including legislative and regulatory matters in Washington, in the states, before the television, radio, and print media, and conducts comprehensive research on a wide range of quality and policy-related issues. AAHP also has an extensive roster of educational programs, including the Annual Institute and Display Forum, the Executive Leadership Program and Minority Management Training and Outreach Program.

Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences
The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences (AATBS) provides license exam preparation and continuing education for mental health professionals. AATBS has served thousands of psychologists, social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists for over 30 years.

Association for Counselor Education and Supervision
The Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) emphasizes the need for quality education and supervision of counselors in all work settings. Through the accreditation process and professional development activities, ACES strives to continue to improve the education, credentialing and supervision of counselors. Publications on current and relevant research, practices, ethical standards and related problems are available to members. Persons who are engaged in the professional preparation of counselors will find leadership through ACES. The purpose of the Association, in accordance with the purpose of ACA, is to advance counselor education and supervision in order to improve guidance, counseling and student development services in all settings of society. Association for Counselors and Educators in Government(ACEG) is an Association for Counseling and Education professionals whose work settings are in government or military related agencies. It is a Division of the American Counseling Association (ACA).


Association for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues in Counseling

International Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors (IAAOC)
This division of the American Counseling Association was originally the Public Offender Counselor Association. Members of IAAOC advocate the development of effective counseling and rehabilitation programs for people with substance abuse problems, other addictions, and adult and/or juvenile public offenders.

Licensed Professional Counselor Board
The Mental Health Counselor Licensing Act was passed in 1987 to provide for the regulation of the practice of mental health counseling in the state of Louisiana and to provide for the regulation of the use of the title "licensed professional counselor". Louisiana Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors
The Louisiana Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors is an organization of counselors in the addictions and/or offender fields, individuals who advocate for the appropriate treatment for such populations, or individuals who work in a related field and/or have an interest in this field (e.g., probation/parole officers, agency counselors and supervisors, correctional counselors, juvenile service workers, treatment specialists, community consultants, students in counseling or a related program, or individuals whose activities in an educational or training capacity contribute significantly to such work). The mission is to be a high quality resource organization which supports prevention, treatment, research, training, and advocacy for the addicted and forensic/criminal justice populations.

National Board for Certified Counselors
The National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and affiliates (NBCC®), an independent not-for-profit credentialing body for counselors, was incorporated in 1982 to establish and monitor a national certification system, to identify those counselors who have voluntarily sought and obtained certification, and to maintain a register of those counselors.

National Career Development Association
National Career Development Association (NCDA) Originally the National Vocational Guidance Association, NCDA was one of the founding associations of the American Counseling Association in 1952. The mission of NCDA is to promote career development for all people across the lifespan through public information, member services, conferences, and publications.

NationalCenter for School Counseling Outcome Research
The National Center for School Counseling Outcome Research is dedicated to improving the practice of School Counseling by developing the research base that is necessary for responsible and effective practice. The Center provides national leadership in the measurement and evaluation of the outcomes of school counseling interventions and programs. The Center is currently conducting several ongoing national projects including:
     1. a Delphi Study designed to identify the critical research questions in the field of School Counseling,
     2. the Publication of Quarterly Research Briefs for School Counseling district guidance directors and school counselors,
     3. an analysis of the strengths and limitations of the evaluation instruments, models and methods and that are used to measure School Counseling outcomes,
     4. a Summer Leadership Institute on the topic of Using Data to Help All Children Succeed, and
