Barry L. Duncan, Psy.D., a therapist, trainer, and researcher with over 17,000 hours of clinical experience, is director of the Heart and Soul of Change Project. Barry has over one hundred publications, including fifteen books. His latest books: The Heroic Client (with H&S presenter Jacqueline Sparks); Brief Intervention for School Problems (with H&S presenter John Murphy); The Heart and Soul of Change; and On Becoming A Better Therapist. He is the co-developer of the Outcome Rating Scale and Session Rating Scale, measures designed to give consumers the voice they deserve as well as provide feedback about the response to services, thus enabling more effective care tailored to client preferences. Because of his self help books, (the latest: What’s Right With You) Barry has appeared on "Oprah,” “The View," and others.
Keynote Speakers
Makungu Akinyela, Ph.D., LMFT is the Clinical Director of the Family Center of South Dekalb, a private practice therapy center in Decatur, Georgia. He is also an Associate Professor teaching family and community development in the Department of African American Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Akinyela has developed and published journal articles, book chapters and monographs on Testimony Therapy, a discursive therapy grounded in the culture of the African American community. He has presented seminars, workshops and keynotes throughout the U.S.A. and abroad on Testimony ideas and social justice.
Lori Ashcraft, Ph.D., CPRP is the Executive Director of Recovery Opportunities Center based in Phoenix, Arizona with Peer Support training, consulting and system development operating in 30 states and three countries. Dr. Ashcraft recently served as a professor for the University of Arizona teaching psycho-social rehabilitation and managing one of eight SAMHSA funded employment demonstration programs. Her latest book, Offering Wellness, provides insight to the “whole person” wellness and Recovery approach. Lori has had a strong interest in the therapeutic effects of self-determination, choice, and personal freedom.
Michael Lambert, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology and Susa Young Gates University Professor at Brigham Young University. He is the current editor of the 5th Edition of Bergin & Garfield’s Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change and the author of Prevention of Treatment Failure: The Use of Measuring, Monitoring, & Feedback in Clinical Practice. He has been in private practice for the last 35 years and teaches graduate courses in psychotherapy, supervision, and clinical research methods.
Jacqueline A. Sparks, Ph.D. is an associate professor of family therapy in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island and Project Leader of the Heart and Soul of Change Project. She is author or co-author numerous articles and chapters as well as two books: Heroic Client and Heroic Clients, Heroic Agencies: Partners for Change (both with H&S presenter Barry Duncan). She is co-founder of the Heroicagencies Listserv, an international discussion forum for client-directed, outcome-informed implementation.
Workshop Presenters
Morten Anker, Ph.D. Cand., is a therapist and researcher at the Family Counselling Office in Vestfold. Morten is the principle investigator of the largest study ever conducted about outcome feedback with couples, a study that changed the way a country delivers services. He is a Certified Trainer of CDOI and regularly conducts workshops across Norway.
George Braucht, M.S., LPC is a Certified CDOI Trainer with three decades of experience delivering substance abuse, mental health, and crisis services; teaching college psychology, counseling and criminal justice courses; and conducting program evaluation, research, professional development, and system-change consultations.
Robert T. Bohanske, Ph.D. is the Chief of Clinical Services and Clinical Training at Southwest Behavioral Health Services in Phoenix, Arizona and Project Leader of the HSCP. He holds adjunct faculty positions at Arizona State, Argosy, and Ottawa University, and consults with the Arizona Department of Health Services as a member of the Best Practices Committee.
David Claud, MS is the CEO for the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County, Florida. He conducted the first pilot of CDOI practices that examined efficiency variables and has successfully integrated CDOI concepts in grants and proposals for funding. In 2007 his agency was awarded a $1.2 million contract from the state of Florida to design and implement a demonstration project using CDOI practices with a “dual diagnosis” population.
Jonathan Hunt-Glassman is the Special Assistant to the President of Danya International, Inc. and the product manager for MyOutcomes, a consumer driven outcomes management system. He coordinates the efforts of researchers, content specialists, web site designers and developers to ensure that complex health information is translated into intuitive web-based applications.
Jesse Owen, Ph.D. is assistant professor in the Education and Counseling Psychology Department, University of Louisville. He is the incoming associate editor for Psychotherapy, APA's Division 29 (Psychotherapy) flagship journal. His research interests include romantic relationships, couples therapy, and common factors in psychotherapy.
Andrea McKenzie, Dip Soc Wk is a Youth and Community services manager at Wesley Community Action, and is of Maori descent – from Ngati Tuwharetoa in the North Island. Andrea has been actively involved in the design and development of the community services division at Wesley Community Action.
John Murphy, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Central Arkansas, has extensive experience implementing collaborative approaches with young people and school problems (www.drjohnmurphy.com). He recently authored (with Barry Duncan) the book, Brief Intervention for School Problems (2nd ed.): Outcome-Informed Strategies (Guilford, 2007).
Robin Pope, MWP is the Practice Manager at Wesley Community Action in New Zealand and a certified CDOI trainer. Robyn is committed to social justice and places the Treaty of Waitangi—the founding document between first nations people of New Zealand (Maori) and the Crown as a key framework for her work and interactions—including the implementation of CDOI.
Jeff Reese, Ph.D. is assistant professor in the Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology at the University of Kentucky and Project Leader for the HSCP. He is also Secretary for the Promotion of Psychotherapy Science section within Division 17 of APA. Current research is focused on client feedback in therapy, training, and supervision.
Sami Timimi, MBChB, MRCPsych is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Director of Postgraduate Education in the National Health Service in Lincolnshire and a Visiting Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Lincoln, UK. He has authored 4 books including Naughty Boys: Anti-Social Behaviour, ADHD and the Role of Culture, and co-edited or co-authored 4 more books including, (with Carl Cohen) Liberatory Psychiatry: Philosophy, Politics, and Mental Health.
