"Professional School Counselors:  Contributing to Students Success"

The Louisiana School Counselor Association (LSCA) is the state division of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the largest division of the Louisiana Counseling Association (LCA).

MEMBERSHIP

LSCA has six types of membership:

  1. Professional-A professional member must be employed as a school counselor, hold a Masters' Degree in Counseling or related areas and have State Certification.
  2. Associate Membership-One who formerly served as a school counselor or one who is a school counselor but does not meet the professional membership requirements. Persons working in a school counseling program may become an Associate Member upon the recommendation of a Professional Member.
  3. Honorary - An Honorary Member may be voted into LSCA for exceptional meritorious service to the state guidance program and/or LSCA.
  4. Retiree- A retiree Member is one who upon retirement held or qualified for Professional Membership.
  5. Student- A Student Member is one who is a full time student at an accredited college or university who is pursuing a degree in guidance and counseling or a higher degree
  6. Sustaining- A Sustaining Member is any person, company or corporation interested in guidance and counseling, but does not qualify for any other type of membership.

PURPOSES
The purposes of LSCA are as follows:

  • To foster a close personal and professional relationship among school counselors in Louisiana, public and private, and with counselors in other settings.
  • To advance the profession of counseling in order to maximize the educational/academic, occupational; and personal-social growth of each individual.
  • To improve the standards of school counseling and the relationships with other pupil personnel services for students in elementary, middle and/or junior high, secondary, and post-secondary settings.
  • To assume an active role in helping people to understand and improve such services.
  • To develop, implement and foster interest in career development programs.
  • To publish scientific, educational, and professional materials.

MISSION STATEMENT: To support professional school counselors as they assist students and their families in academic, career, and personal/social development.

GOALS

  1. To advance the LSCA initiative to clearly define the role of a professional school counselor to our publics in the school, the community, and the state.
  2. To provide leadership and to support legislation that relates to the changing nature of school counseling and student needs.
  3. To provide professional development opportunities.
  4. To recognize outstanding contributions to the school counseling profession through recognition and awards. For additional information, click here.

PARISH OR AREA ASSOCIATIONS
     Parish or area associations are encouraged by LSCA. Application for a charter should be made to the LSCA president

LSCA SCHOLARSHIP 
     The Louisiana School Counselor Association has established a Scholarship Program to assist a candidate with a post-secondary education. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Master's student pursuing a post-secondary education in Louisiana. The scholarship winner will be selected from a different region of the state on a rotating basis.  For additional information and copy of the application, click here.
 
LSCA AWARDS AND RECOGNITION PROGRAM
     Each year, LSCA accepts nominations for those persons who have made outstanding contributions to school counselors or to education with special emphasis on the school counseling profession. Nominations must be received by the Awards Chair no later than September 14, but will be accepted by the chair at any time preceeding that deadline. Awards are presented to the winners at the annual conference held the first week in October. All persons nominated, with the exception of advocacy and legislator must be current members of LSCA. State winners will be forwarded to the American School Counselor Association for consideration for national recognition if additional information is supplied by the winner.

Nominations Sought for 2008-2009 Election

        LSCA members are encouraged to participate in one of the Association's most significant activities - the nomination and election of individuals for leadership position on the Board of Directors. Candidates are sought for President-Elect, Elementary  Vice President and Secondary Vice President.  The future of our organization is dependent on the selection of individuals from across the state that can contribute to the continued advancement of our organization.  If you would like the opportunity to serve or if you know of a colleague that you believe would best represent your interest at the state level, please consider filing a nomination NOW.
