Demystifying Eating Disorders: A Clinician's Guide to Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders are considered the most dangerous category of mental health disorders, often co-occurring with other conditions for which clients seek therapy. They affect 30 million Americans of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds, with binge eating disorder (BED) being the most common. Despite their prevalence, severity, and impact on mental health, many eating disorders go undetected and untreated in clinical settings. This presentation will provide an overview of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders in clinical practice. Discussion will include a review of evidenced-based treatments, including “third wave” CBT’s and trauma models.

  • Summarize changes and revisions to eating disorders in DSM-V.
  • Identify etiological risk factors and common co-morbidities associated with eating disorders.
  • Discuss common difficulties in diagnosing and treating Eating Disorders and assessment strategies.
  • Explore the role of trauma and neurobiology in maintaining the eating disorder cycle and implications for treatment.
  • Understand the importance of experiential practices in the healing process.
  • Review effective treatment models for Eating Disorders therapy.

About The Presenter

Mary Munger, MSW, LCSW is a social worker who has held a private practice in New Orleans and Baton Rouge since 2008. She earned her BS in Psychology in 2000 from Spring Hill College and her MSW from Tulane School of Social Work in 2002.
She specializes in work with older adolescents and adults with an emphasis on eating disorders, compulsive behavior, anxiety disorders, codependency, relationship issues, grief, and trauma. She is a DBT Skills Training Faciliatator since 2013 and also offers continuing education workshops for clinicians in schools and throughout the community. She has been a 2-time Panelist for Southern Smash, an eating disorder awareness and prevention program geared towards college students.
Mary worked at the Eating Disorder Treatment Center at River Oaks Hospital New Orleans, from 2006-2012 where she provided assessment, treatment, and discharge planning for patients with anorexia, bulimia, and related eating disorders at the inpatient/partial hospitalization treatment center. She also provided individual, family, and group therapy and facilitated groups on relapse prevention, spirituality, DBT, CBT, body image, and group process. Mary has her certification in EMDR Basic Certification Parts 1 and II as well as in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy which she earned from the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy.
