Raising Emotionally Secure Youth in Modern Culture: A Prescriptive, Integrative Therapeutic Approach to Working with Children & Adolescents (Metairie)

Children and adolescents are being referred to clinical mental health agencies and clinics at an increasing rate. Mental health clinicians will discuss how they can facilitate therapeutic intervention(s) based on theoretical orientation and in addition the client’s presenting issue(s)/diagnosis(es) utilizing a prescriptive intervention or an integrative approach. Participants will challenge their decision making and treatment planning prior to initiating services. Additionally, participants will discover how early intervention and the dissemination of education and training can positively impact our youth during their early years while entering into preschool and early elementary, academic environments.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn statistics focusing on the number of children and adolescents receiving mental health services comparatively over the past years.
  • Review presenting issues and diagnoses serviced in the clinical setting.
  • Participate in discussion outlining recommendations and initiatives mental health therapists can pursue to advocate for early intervention and education to children, parents, and educators.
  • Participate in discussion about integrating mental health clinician’s theoretical orientation(s) and techniques based on the client’s presenting issue(s) and/or diagnosis(es).
  • Join in discussion about developing a prescriptive intervention/treatment plan for the client prior to initiating services.
  • Learn about evidenced based therapeutic programs and models that participants can utilize in their outreach initiatives with both parents and teachers/other professionals working with children.

About The Presenter

Erin Dugan, Ph.D., NCC, CRC, LPC- S is a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor and Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. She is Counseling and Clinic Director at the LSUHSC Child & Family Counseling Clinic.
Erin earned her BA in Psychology from  University of Mississippi in 2000 and her MEd from UNO in 2002. She  earned her PhD in 2005 in Counselor Education and Supervision with an Emphasis:  Play Therapy from University of Mississippi.
Since 2014 she has served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at LSU Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health Professions where she also serves on numerous committees and advises 9 academic programs both Undergraduate and Graduate level.
Previously, Erin served as Associate Professor and Interim Department Head in the Dept of Rehabilitation Counseling,  Interim Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, School of Allied Health LSU Health Sciences Center and Director of the LSUHSC Child and Family Counseling Clinic.
Erin is a certified Child Centered Play Therapist with CBT PTSD youth training, Child-Parent Psychotherapy training and many other certifications including being a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, a Registered Play therapist Supervisor and a National Certified Counselor.
She is a member of numerous professional organizations including  ACA, AAMFT, ARCA, NRCA, APT and more.
Erin has presented both locally and nationally in the field of child and family counseling and play therapy and is a highly respected clinician and teacher.

3.0 CE clock hours in Diagnosis; No NBCC hours through LCA.
