Adolescent Substance Abuse and Addiction: New Pathways in Diagnosis and Treatment

This presentation will provide attendees the knowledge and skills needed to implement group motivational interviewing interventions to assist adolescents who are at risk for developing or are currently experiencing substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The session will also provide attendees with opportunities to practice key aspects of group motivational interviewing interventions through case studies. Handouts will be provided, and discussion will be encouraged. 
There will also be an overview of specific learning styles and communication techniques that are effective with adolescents. Specific interventions for clients with substance abuse vs addiction. 
Assessment and diagnosis of adolescents to determine appropriateness of care and level of care. One area of focus will be the assessment and diagnosis of substance abuse vs addiction and the ramifications of misdiagnosis. 
Examining the historical and current trends in adolescent substance use 
Assessing the family for appropriateness for level of care. Assess families protective and risk factors.

 Attendees will learn the latest treads in adolescent substance abuse treatment including group motivational interviewing interventions., the importance of accurate diagnosis between substance abuse and addiction, and effective family involvement.
