Professional Counselor Burnout and Self-Care Strategies

Freudenberger (1974) defined burnout as “to fail, wear out or become exhausted by making excessive demands on energy, strength or resources” (p. 159). Burnout develops over time and is based on interpersonal and institutional variables (Galek, Flannelly, Greene, & Kudler, 2011). Burnout affects your work performance, job satisfaction, and home life; and can lead to impairment in your social and interpersonal relationships if left untreated. The sad part is that many people do not have enough self-awareness to realize they are burned out! This workshop will define professional counselor burnout, provide current research regarding burnout and self-care, offer assessment tools, and provide interactive strategies to prevent or combat burnout, including SMART goal setting, breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation exercise, and meditation.
