Neurobiology of Relationships: Treating Relationship Problems

1/8/2020 - 1/8/2020
8:30 AM - 3:40 PM
Location: Holiday Inn 9940 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge

This workshop focuses on how to use this emerging knowledge of brain function to improve how we conduct therapy with individuals in intimate relationships.

The presenter will incorporate his own research findings with those of leading affective neuroscientists to describe the stages of relationship development over the life span of relationships. He will describe the underlying brain systems and neurohormones that drive intimate behavior during each stage. He will specifically cover initial attraction, establishment of a committed relationship, parenting of children, and demise of the relationship due to divorce or death. At each stage of the relationship life cycle, the presenter will describe treatments and therapies designed to enhance that stage in the life cycle or deal with problems that disrupt that stage. Specific attention will be paid to preparing couples for a relationship; enhancing relationship satisfaction; assisting couples to cope with relationship or family problems; and helping individuals recover from the loss of a partner. The presenter will draw from his extensive experience directing couple and family therapy graduate programs and family therapy clinics to provide clinical examples that clearly illustrate the roles of brain and hormonal systems described in the workshop. Each workshop participant will be provided a digital copy of a paper entitled The Neurobiology of Love that details as well as provides color illustrations and references for all material covered in the workshop.
