Location: LSUHSC, New Orleans, New Orleans

EMDR Therapy is a comprehensive psychotherapy that accelerates the treatment of a wide range of pathologies and self-esteem issues related to disturbing events and present life conditions.  This interactional, standardized approach has been empirically tested in over 20 randomized controlled studies with trauma patients and hundreds of published case reports evaluating a considerable range of presenting complaints including, depression, anxiety, phobias, excessive grief, somatic conditions and addictions and compulsive disorders.  EMDR Therapy is guided by the Adaptive Information Processing model hypothesizes that unprocessed memories appear to set the basis for a wide range of dysfunction.  A number of neurophysiological studies have documented the rapid post-treatment EMDR therapy effects. This core training, EMDR Therapy Part 1 and Part 2, train mental health clinicians in the standardized protocol for EMDR treatment and meet all EMDR International Association’s (EMDRIA) requirements.

This 52 hour 2 part course will include 6 seven hour classes and 10 hours of consultation.  The course will include three components which will be inter-woven during the course:

Instructional: 22 hours of lectures based on reading, patients, and issues; actual, transcribed, and videotaped demonstrations of the method with patients and others.  The goal of the Instructional Section of the training is to provide information and understanding of the EMDR Therapy Method, as well as EMDR Therapy case conceptualization and treatment planning.

Supervised Practicum: 20 hours of supervised practice and experiential exercises; The goal of the Supervised Practicum is to facilitate the demonstration, practice, application and integration of the EMDR Therapy methodology as outlined in the Shapiro text, and the EMDRIA Definition of EMDR Therapy.

Consultation: 10 hours of consultation on your EMDR Therapy work with patients.  Consultation is a required content area.  This will help trainees be able to safely and effectively integrate the use of EMDR Therapy into their clinical setting. Consultation provides an opportunity for the integration and application of the theory of EMDR Therapy along with the development of EMDR Therapy skills.  During consultation, trainees will receive individualized feedback and instruction in the areas of case conceptualization, client readiness, target selection, treatment planning, specific application of skills, and the integration of EMDR Therapy into clinical practice.  Ethical and professional guidelines already call for clinicians to obtain consultation when incorporating new methods into their clinical practice. Consultation increases the use of EMDR Therapy by those who have received training, reduces the formation of bad habits and the risks of problematic use of EMDR Therapy. It also allows the clinician to develop and integrate EMDR Therapy skills creatively into their other skills in a way that enhances clinical efficiency and effectiveness in helping a wider range of clients meet their goals for change.
