During the past 50 years, a great deal has been learned about the etiology, epidemiology, typology, phenomenology, and acute care treatment of alcohol and other drug (AOD) disorders. Additionally, emerging data has indicated that the prevalence of remission and recovery is high, with 10s of millions of Americans who report having resolved a significant AOD problem. Understanding more about how this large population has successfully achieved stable remission and recovery is a topic of increasing scientific and public health interest. This talk will review the latest findings from a nationally representative sample of the US adult population who have resolved a significant AOD problem. Findings include the recovery pathways followed, recovery identity, number of recovery attempts, and the course of change in functioning and well-being after resolving a AOD problem. Implications for research and practice will be reviewed.
