Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases or conditions. The marijuana plant contains more than 100 different chemicals called cannabinoids. Each one has a different effect on the body. Recent studies have shown that medical marijuana is effective in controlling chronic non-cancer pain, alleviating nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, treating wasting syndrome associated with AIDS, controlling muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma, and mental health conditions. These studies state that the alleviating benefits of marijuana outweigh the negative effects of the drug and recommend that marijuana be administered to patients who have failed to respond to other therapies. While the subject of medical marijuana is becoming an increasingly heated medical issue, it also continues to stir the embers of legal arguments.
