South Louisiana EMDR Regional Network presents…
Ecotherapy-Informed EMDR: Incorporating Nature in EMDR Therapy
PRESENTER:
Kathryn Dietzway is the founder AND Clinical Director of The Therapy Garden, a group psychotherapy and wellness practice in Lafayette, Louisiana. Kathryn acknowledges that her practice is located on lands which are indigenous to the sovereign nation of the Chitimacha Tribe, with current headquarters located in Charenton, Louisiana. Kathryn is an EMDR Certified therapist, a Somatic Ecotherapist, and is level 1 and 2 trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy. She specializes in therapies that empower clients to build safe and conscious connections to their mind and body, to the people in their lives, and to the earth and universe that is their home. To do this, Kathryn pulls primarily from EMDR, Ecotherapy, and Clinical Hypnotherapy in her psychotherapy work. Kathryn co-leads The Therapy Garden’s Ecotherapy program, where EMDR and traditional psychotherapy sessions are held outside in local parks and forests, as well as wellness retreats and trauma-informed yoga classes. Kathryn is passionate about delivering eco-psychotherapy to clients, and also about training clinicians in the field of ecotherapy for personal and professional practice. Kathryn’s undergraduate background is in Sociology and Anthropology and these approaches heavily inform her psychotherapy work. Kathryn holds a master’s degree in social work which was obtained from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Kathryn started her social work career as a Medical Case Manager at CrescentCare in New Orleans, and has since worked as a school social worker and inpatient psychiatric therapist, until making the full transition into private practice in 2019.

Program Description:
In this presentation, I focus primarily on how an Ecotherapy-informed lens complements the EMDR standard protocol in phases 1, 2 and beyond. In phases 1-2, EMDR focuses on history taking and preparation. During phase 1, an ecotherapy-informed lens takes into account the client’s relationship not only to other humans, but to the land they have been raised on, considering environmental and ecological traumas such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and intergenerational racial and cultural traumas. Additionally, an Ecotherapy-informed lens considers favorite memories in nature throughout clients’ lives, which can then be utilized for preparation, resource development and stabilization during phase 4. During EMDR phase 2, preparation, an ecotherapy-informed lens incorporates nature imagery and nature interaction as a central feature for promoting nervous system regulation and window of tolerance development. For clients who display being clinically appropriate for an outdoor setting, the calm place resource can be enhanced by holding sessions outside, making access and effectiveness of future clam place use more pronounced not only during phase 2, but also during phase 4 for stabilization and support. In summary, participants of this presentation will gain a foundational understanding of the field of ecotherapy along with information about how and why it can become a useful adjunct to the standard protocol of EMDR Therapy.
