Many clinicians are presented with a client suffering from a traumatic experience that is often unresolved. Although it may not be the primary goal of the client in treatment, it often is the main symptom being presented. This session will review the clinical criteria for the various trauma and stressor-related disorders. It will review barriers often faced with effective and appropriate treatment of trauma as well as interventions to these barriers. The session will overview various treatment interventions that can be utilized in the counseling experience. It will provide an overview of the biopsychosocial effects of trauma. The goal of this session is to create awareness and interventions for the treatment of clients suffering from symptoms related to traumatic experiences.

Learning Objectives:

1. Defining trauma and understanding the specifics of clinical criteria.
2. Understanding the biopsychosocial components of trauma and its impact on the brain.
3. Identify potential barriers associated with trauma treatment and effectiveness.
4. Identify application of clinical/psychotherapeutic interventions for symptoms of trauma stress to facilitate stabilization and recovery for the client.
