Substance abuse has been a prominent issue within the United States since the beginning of time (Prohibition, Crack Crisis, Opioid Epidemic). The growing rate of substance abusers have left the number of readily available substance abuse counselors at a deficit. Substance abuse counseling is a specialty that has been designated to counselors with differing levels of education, experience, recovery status and credentials. Substance abuse counselors have many roles and responsibilities that often time leads to burnout. Not much research has been conducted on the professional quality of life of substance abuse counselors and how it corresponds to the population served.
