Sexual Abuse, either as a primary or concomitant concern, is a common issue that emerges in the course of counseling and family therapy. Issues of sexual abuse are often complex in that they occasionally involve clients (children, adolescents and adults) who are both victims of, and perpetrators of, sexual abuse. This Pre-Conference Learning Institute will provide an overview of assessment/diagnosis and intervention strategies for working with victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse. Specific protocols and ethical considerations will be presented, including issues of confidentiality and informed consent.
This session will examine the complex legal, ethical, and clinical issues that often arise in working with victims or perpetrators of sexual abuse – including considerations of privacy and confidentiality with minor clients, treatment collaboration with third parties (parents, criminal justice system, etc.), and mandated reporting obligations.
