Eating Disorders Session

Event Overview

Eating disorders (EDs) including Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are mental disorders with significant biopsychosocial consequences, including potentially lethal medical complications, poor treatment outcomes, high rates of remission, and high mortality rates. There is evidence that post-pandemic, these disorders are occurring in clients at increasingly younger ages, in all demographic populations, and with greater severity. Because of the seriousness of these disorders and the likelihood that counselors will work with clients who experience problems related to eating and weight at some point in their practice, counselors need additional training in this area. In this presentation, we will review the eating disorders continuum and the common fluctuations between disorders. We will discuss risk factors, recommended levels of care, and review evidence-based treatments, including CBT-enhanced and mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches (Dialectical Behavior Therapy; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Case examples and sample client activities provided throughout the presentation.
