March 3: Breaking Shame Shields in the Playroom: Cultivating Shame Resilience in Adolescents: Shame, guilt, humiliation, and embarrassment are feelings adolescents often experience while navigating their way in the world. Due to a lack of emotional literacy or a safe environment to explore and express these feelings, shame shields are developed. Adolescents often face poor shame resilience due to the historical narrative presented in many families. Narratives such as “there is no room for weakness” or the classic “get over it” are heard by adolescents within their family systems. This workshop will explore the impact of historical family narratives on adolescents and the culturally relevant implementation of play therapy techniques with adolescents grounded in research on play therapy, shame, and vulnerability.
March 4: Looking Deeper into the Presenting Problem: Practicing Cultural Humility in the Play Therapy Room: When working with culturally diverse populations the need to look deeper into the presenting problem is more prevalent with those exhibiting symptoms of racial trauma on the rise. Often times, clinical professionals are minimizing cultural and racial experiences in their treatment of Black, Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC). This workshop will focus on bringing cultural humility into the play therapy setting and challenging all play therapist and mental health professionals with examining their potential biases, how they show up in their work and their impact on the clients served
