About The Workshop

This workshop will cover issues related to working with Aging clients and their families as well as covering issues of how to help the clinician who is coping with aging in his or her personal life. Techniques for working with aging clients will be taught as well as skills for helping family members dealing with the stress of an aging member. Participants will discuss real-life situations they face in their practice and learn specific tools for helping clinicians work with the client, the family and themselves.

Learning Objectives

  • Helping the Client: Discuss statistics on aging today and Masterson stages of development. Cover clinical issues facing aging clients: physical, emotional, occupational, financial, lifestyle relationships, loss.
  • Helping the Family: Discuss the Sandwich Generation – helping clients cope with aging parents and young kids. Address financial issues – the burden of health care and living as people live longer. Discuss specific stressors: decision making, driving, living independently, time for yourself and your nuclear family. Learn skills and resources to help family members coping with the stress of aging family.
  • Helping the Clinician: Discuss specific stress around working as a clinician when coping with your own aging family and learn skills for self-care including how to cope with distraction. Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, as well as mind-body techniques, will be addressed. Cover real life situations such as how often is ok to cancel in a crisis; what if the crises continue to happen over a period of time; self-disclosure – how much and how often. Learn to differentiate between life stage and chronic stress versus DSM-5 disorders such as anxiety and depression.
