The first session with an adult client is very important in that it both sets the tone for the therapeutic relationship and also provides the clinician with enough information to make a competent assessment and develop an appropriate treatment plan. As psychotherapists, we may have "blind spots" regarding what we need to ask or we may back off from a fear of overwhelming the new client. But there are ways to elicit a great deal of information from a client while maintaining an emotionally safe environment and these methods will be explored in this workshop.
