About The Workshop

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Intimate Partner Stalking (IPS), also referred to as Domestic Violence, are responsible for a great deal of physical, emotional and psychological trauma, especially among women. This workshop will explore current theories and prevalence of IPV/IPS, characteristics of victims and offenders, and current treatment techniques. It will also examine the mental health diagnoses often associated with IPV/IPS.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss current theories of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)/Intimate Partner Stalking (IPS) and explore their prevalence.
  • Investigate risk and protective factors involved in IPV/IPS, including danger signs of violence potential.
  • Examine the correlation between IPV and IPS and the impacts on victims.
  • Identify DSM-5 diagnoses commonly associated with IPV/IPS cases/clients.
  • Learn to recognize characteristics of offenders.
  • Learn treatment protocols for working with both victims and offenders.
  • Learn skills for preventing IPV/IPS.

About The Presenter

Marilyn Thorpe, PH.D., LPC-S, LMFT earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education, specializing in mental health counseling, from the University of New Orleans in 1996.  She has worked as a clinician, administrator, and supervisor in mental health, and also served as an adjunct professor in the graduate Counseling program at UNO. She served as the counselor for the Plaquemines Parish FINS program, and received the Domestic Violence grant from Plaquemines Parish to work with court adjudicated victims and offenders. She has been a certified Life Coach since 2016. She currently supervises Provisional LPCs and LMFT’s as they work toward full licensure.
