Interpersonal Therapy & Interventions for Adolescent Depression

5/9/2019 - 5/9/2019
8:00 AM - 11:45 AM
Location: 3737 W. Esplanade Avenue, Metairie

Depression in adolescents appears to be the result of complex interactions between nature, nurture, and the ever-changing times. Often times, adolescent depression goes untreated because the symptoms are masked as “typical” adolescent behaviors.  One in 20 adolescents will experience an episode of major depression and it appears to be on the rise (ADAP, 2018). This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for select depressive disorders and provide participants with developmentally appropriate interventions for adolescents with depression.  Specifically, this workshop will highlight interpersonal therapy and interventions related to this time-limited, empirically validated treatment modality which emphasizes the relational and communication interactions of an individual.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will gain insight into adolescent development and the rising concerns of mental health disorders in adolescence.
  • Participants will review interventions that promote improving communication and problem solving skills for adolescents with depression.
  • Participants will learn tenants of interpersonal therapy, which is an evidenced-based treatment modality for adolescents with mild to moderate depression.
  • Participants will discuss criteria related to a depression diagnosis based on the DSM-5.
  • Participants will discuss adolescent self-harm and suicide risk and review treatment interventions to address risk reduction
