Workshop #4                February 15, 2019 The Ethical Importance of Parental Consultation when Working with Adolescents

Kellie Camelford, Ph.D, LPC-S

Adolescence is a difficult developmental period when clients may enter into counseling for the first time for various presenting issues, willingly or unwillingly. Research shows adolescents have better progress in counseling when parents participate in the process or know how to facilitate change at home. This workshop will define parental/ caregiver consultation and provide best practices a clinician may utilize to integrate ongoing consultation with an adolescent’s guardian. Furthermore, this workshop will highlight various standards from the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) as it relates to working with minors and their guardians in the counseling relationship.
