Self-Awareness and the Ethical Application of the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies

10/1/2019 - 10/1/2019
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Sheraton, 500 Canal New Orelans, New Orleans

Immediately following the closing session of the LCA conference, Dr. Kent Butler and Dr. Henry McCarthy will present this workshop.  There is an additional fee for this 1.5 CE clock hour opportunity.  This workshop is an opportunity to earn an additional 1.5 hours in Ethics but also make a charitable donation to the Haitian schools.

Following an explanation of the rationale for the revised Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC), the audience will be introduced to the initial praxis of the MSJCC, ethical examination of counselor self-awareness. Participants will explore their relevant attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and skills and discuss ethically how these impact the counseling relationship. This will be an interactive session as participants self-analyze and share their world views and perspectives. One powerful way of examining self-awareness is to choose to engage in a cross-cultural immersion experience and to reflect deeply on that experience. In this regard, the personal experiences and reflections from one of the presenters, who is involved in cross-cultural volunteer service programs in Haiti and the U.S., will be shared and explored as representative examples.

This special session is a consciousness-raiser and a fund-raiser for the Haitian Association for Human Development (AHDH in French, thus their website address is www.AHDHhaiti.org). AHDH is a New Orleans based nonprofit organization of Haitian natives and their allies that promotes the development and wellness of people living in dire poverty in Haiti through grants and volunteer service to educational and healthcare projects. All the registration fees collected for this CEU session will pay for tuition and uniforms for young children in tent communities near Port-au-Prince to go to a mission school this year ($50/child), because there is no public school system.
