CE Description:

Self-disclosure, boundaries, and balance. How do we stay true to our professional ethics while providing a therapeutic experience to a new generation of clients? This ethics CEU will explore the world of therapy and boundaries in regard to the Millennial age group. More research is showing that millennials are attending therapy at higher rates than previous generations and wanting an authentic interaction with their therapist. We will explore the LCA and LABSWE ethics and professional boundaries criteria. Discussion and break out groups will used as well to explore the appropriate use of self as a tool to engagement, rapport and therapeutic interactions.

 

Objectives:

  1. Review LCA and LABSWE Ethics and professional boundaries
  2. Discuss real cases in which a balance between self-disclosure and boundaries is required
  3. Reaffirm ethical decision-making skills while meeting client needs.

 

Agenda:

9a-915- Introduction and Review of Objectives

9:15- 9:45- Review ethics from LCA and LABSWE

9:45-10:15- Discuss professional boundaries and explore scenarios in which participants felt ethical dilemmas when working with clients.

10:15-11 - Group activity- breakout session with scenarios for attendees to discuss. Groups will present on their case and discuss barriers, ethical concerns and process used to decrease ethical concerns

11-11:15- Break

11:15- Noon- Ethical decision making – exploring tools, consulting, locating resources and the decision process.

Noon- 12:15- questions and course evaluation

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Katie Godshall is the owner of Behavioral Health Learning Collaborative, LLC. She graduated from Tulane School of Social in 2010 with her MSW and certificate in disaster mental health; and in 2019 with her Doctorate in Social Work. During her doctorate program, she researched suicide prevention, grief, loss, and historical and intergenerational trauma. Dr. Godshall started her social work career in New Orleans working with an Assertive Community Treatment team. She moved onto work with the Crisis response team and sexual assault response on-call. Dr. Godshall managed a crisis respite facility, worked in hospice, provided individual, family and group therapy, and trained master level counseling and social work interns. In early January 2020, she launched the Behavioral Health Learning Collaborative which provides CEUs, organizational and clinical consulting and the LCSW supervision. Dr. Godshall also works an Adjunct Professor with Tulane University and her research interests are in the fields of trauma, grief and resiliency.
