WPATH treatment standards and Transgender Mental Health

This workshop will provide information to mental health professionals knowledge on the medical standards associated with gender transitioning alongside skills for addressing social and cultural issues that arise from gender transitioning. The course will review stages of identity development, processes for managing internal and social stigmas and the use of compassion-based therapies and the value of the therapists helping relationship for assisting clients with gender transitioning and accepting their bodies/gender roles as they are and as they change. The seminar will also explore language use and other information therapists can use to provide culturally sensitive care to those exploring issues regarding their gender identity, personal relationships, and mental health.

The seminar will address WPATH gender transitioning medical standards, provide some tools for managing stigmas associated with gender transitioning, and skills for providing culturally competent therapy to clients experiencing conflicts with their assigned gender, questioning gender expression, and processing their feelings that arise while gender transitioning.

This workshop is approved for 1.0 CE clock hours; it was not reviewed for NBCC credits.
