This training will provide homeless providers tools to successfully engage homeless individuals with respect and dignity in impactful way, to increase the probability of successful outcomes in participation in services.

This workshop is approved for 14.0 CE clock hours including 5.0 in Diagnosis.  NBCC credit is not available for this program.

Content:

Impactful Outreach - Content will address safe and respectful engagement; understanding unsheltered homelessness; distinguishing contact driven outreach from housing-focused outreach; clarifying the role of outreach; interface with law enforcement; the service orientation for effective outreach; assessing encampments; and, measuring outreach. (The helping relationship)

 Motivational Interviewing and Assertive Engagement in Homelessness and Housing Programs -Understanding how MI can be a critical tool used to help inspire and support change. Assertive engagement, the cousin of MI, can be useful when/if change is not happening and there are concerns of harm. (The helping relationship, Appraisal of the Individual and Chemical Dependency)

 Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care in Homelessness and Housing Programs - Defining and understanding trauma; principles of a trauma-informed approach; applications of a trauma-informed approach in program design and operations; and, implications to an organization when they become trauma-informed. (The helping relationship and Appraisal of the Individual)

 Introduction Harm Reduction in Homelessness Programs and Housing Services - The basics of harm reduction in homelessness and housing services that looks at how to best support people who use alcohol or other drugs, as well as how to best support people who are homeless or precariously housed and involved in sex work. (The helping relationship, Appraisal of the Individual and Chemical Dependency).
