Serotonergic Psychedelics and Hallucinogens

7/13/2021 - 7/13/2021
12:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Location: Webinar, Sponsored by the Institute for Natural Resources, Cost: $69.00, 4.0 CE clock hours, Webinar

The classic Serotonergic Psychedelics and Hallucinogens are a group of drugs with similar chemical structures and effects on human serotonin receptors. These drugs alter the perceptional awareness of people ingesting them, as well as profoundly changing thoughts and feelings. When under the influence of the classic serotonergics, patients will describe hallucinations, sensations, and images that seem utterly real to the people ingesting them.

Historically, indigenous populations worldwide have used serotonergic psychedelics and hallucinogens for religious and healing rituals. In our modern era, people have used these drugs for social or recreational purposes, to induce feelings of pleasure and euphoria, relieve stress, embark on spiritual experiences, or simply to have altered or different feelings of their surroundings.

The psychedelics and hallucinogens to be explored and discussed include: ? LSD ? Psilocybin (Magic mushrooms) ? Peyote (mescaline) ? DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) Could hallucinogens be utilized as medicines?

Recently, there has been renewed interest in serotonergic psychedelics and hallucinogens for possible therapeutic benefits. The largest area of study is in the treatment of depression and addiction with magic mushrooms and psilocybin. There is recent evidence that psilocybin microdosing may be effective in treating depression, and it is currently being studied in human clinical trials. Psilocybin was granted “Breakthrough Therapy” status by the FDA in 2018. This grant allows pharmaceutical companies to undertake clinical trials for treatment-resistant depression with psilocybin.

As these serotonergic drugs are increasingly becoming more mainstream in today’s society, this webinar is a necessary educational addition for mental health care workers.

This webinar will allow medical professionals to identify compounds and understand the resurgence in classic Serotonergic Psychedelics and Hallucinogens that patients may experiment with and be exposed to. The webinar will also describe the current clinical research concerning potential psychiatric therapy with Magic Mushrooms and Psilocybin.
