Using the educator’s personal story as a case-study, this workshop will explore the characteristics, personality traits, recovery, and treatment challenges of high-functioning alcoholics and Substance Use Disorders. The “continuum” of alcohol and Substance Use Disorders will be discussed as well as diagnostic challenges. Additional treatment and prevention suggestions will be offered that are unique for this population. Evidence-based integrated treatment for dual diagnosis care will be denied and treatment strategies will be described. Finally, shame as a barrier to treatment for this population will be explored.
