Alzheimer’ s Services of the Capital Area will be hosting its 28th Education Conference on Alzheimer's – The Journey of Dementia. The conference is April 19, 2023, at Crowne Plaza Executive Center at 4728 Constitution Avenue, Baton Rouge, La. 70808. Continuing education units for RNs, Social Workers, Counselors, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Nursing Facility Administrators, and Activity Therapists will be available. Registration will begin on February 1, 2023.

The purpose of the conference is to increase the knowledge and skills of participants (caregivers and health care professionals) on Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The overarching theme of the Education Conference is The Journey of Dementia. Through the 4 presentations as titled: Understanding the Different Dementias, Sorting Out the Three D's: Delirium, Depression and Dementia, Learning the Difference between Confrontation and Supportive Communication and Creative and Practical Tips for Getting Through the Day - the presenter will provide applicable and practical skills and tips to better equip healthcare professionals and caregivers to better serve those with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Presentation #1:
1. Distinguish between typical and atypical changes in brain function associated with the aging process
2. Discuss the importance and benefits of obtaining an accurate diagnosis when dementia is suspected
3. Compare various dementias regarding initial symptoms, progression patterns, and management and treatment strategies

Presentation #2:
1. Describe the value and importance of obtaining the correct diagnosis for an individual when changes are noted
2. Compare and contrast among the conditions of delirium, depression/anxiety, and dementia
3. Discuss simple screening and assessment strategies that may be used to identify the conditions

Presentation #3:
1.Use validation and empathetic communication techniques when presented with someone in distress
2.Discriminate between redirection and distraction, and recognize the value of each in helping someone with dementia, after initiating the interaction with empathy
3.Describe the value of knowing the person and their history in effective communication efforts

Presentation #4:
1. Discuss the importance of knowing oneself and those being supported in effectively planning and creating days that work well
2. Develop daily patterns and routines that meet the needs of those living with dementia
3. Describe the value of humor in health and in healthy relationships
4. Identify several simple stress reduction strategies
