Getting Comfortable with Death, Loss, and Grief

6/30/2023 - 6/30/2023
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: In Person; Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Center, 3900 General Taylor Street, Cost:: 45-85; Approved for 3.0 CE clock hours in Diagnosis, New Orleans

Laura Perkins, Certified Thanatologist, National Certified Counselor will provide information about thanatology and grief counseling, to help clinicians get closer to death, loss, and grief. We will review: thanatology, the history of the death industry, common experiences of grief, the neuroanatomy of grieving, DSM-V diagnoses related to grief, different types of grief, and practical applications for grief therapy. After this CEU you will feel more capable navigating death, loss and grief. Experiential activities including a breakout group and a meditation exercise are included to help clinicians address their own feelings and behaviors toward grief, death, and dying.

This will be a presentation about grief--how to become comfortable with death and loss as a normal part of life, how to identify prolonged grief, and how to lead clients through the tasks of mourning. This addresses counseling theory because many therapists aren't grief-informed and don't understand the current literature about the tasks of mourning, which is a crucial update from the 5 stages of grief. It also addresses counseling theory by teaching clinicians how to identify prolonged grief disorder. This workshop addresses human growth and development because it helps therapists get close to a natural and unavoidable aspect of life: death.
