The prevalence of the Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis increasingly brings education, health, mental health, and other professionals in contact with people with ASD. This course is an overview of information that will empower employees in these fields to have better understanding of the social and communication deficits of individuals with ASD and some best practices used to accommodate the needs of those individuals.
After completion of the course participants in will:
Understand changes to DSM 5 Criteria for Diagnosing ASD to encompass the wide range of behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Recognize the struggles of people with ASD and some methods for dealing with the needs of patients with ASD.
Recognize the significance of behavioral approach to ASD treatment including the benefits of positive reinforcement vs. rule governed behavior in promoting growth for people with ASD.
Understand some methods in communicating effectively with persons with ASD and how to better support people with ASD during times of distress related to deficits associated with the disorder.
