Whether you want more information on how to work with clients presenting with narcissistic personality styles, or to be able to provide high quality psychoeducation to clients experiencing narcissistic abuse (or both), having a strong working knowledge of narcissistic, antagonistic, and antagonism-adjacent personality style is essential. Despite the need for clinicians to understand the finer points of antagonistic personality styles such as narcissism, it is often not a focus of graduate training or clinical supervision. Many clinicians feel underprepared or overwhelmed when managing clients with antagonistic personality styles or unclear on how to provide psychoeducation to partners or family members of people with these personality styles. Understanding these styles goes beyond just an explication of DSM-5 criteria, and instead requires a deeper exploration of theoretical formulations, personality assessment, and the behavioral dynamics that are part and parcel of narcissistic and antagonistic personality styles.

This program will address narcissism, narcissistic personality disorder, and antagonistic personality styles. First, we will focus on narcissism, narcissistic personality disorder, the key diagnostic elements, and etiological factors in the development of a narcissistic personality style. We will also consider the diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder as postulated by the DSM-5 as well as the new trait formulations of NPD. The role of narcissistic patterns in other psychiatric disorders will also be discussed. The challenges of assessment with narcissistic clients will also be reviewed Treatment considerations for NPD, narcissism, and comorbid patterns (e.g., narcissism in mood disorders, substance use) and the contiguity with other antagonistic personality styles will also be explored. We will also explore how clinicians can manage themselves, and the discomfort and helplessness clients with these personality styles may activate in clinicians.
