Cancer care is becoming increasingly complex. New anti-cancer drugs and treatments
are emerging at a steadily escalating pace. More new drugs have been approved in the
last 3 years (38) than in the preceding 10 years. These new drugs are extraordinarily
effective and expensive. Costs for cancer care will increase by 40% from 2010 to 2020.
Now, more and more patients are surviving cancer. Over the last 20 years the cancer
survival rate has increased by 1% every year. Now there are over 16 million cancer
survivors, with more every day. With the aging of our population (the Baby-Boomers)
there will be a growth of 42% in cancer cases by 2025. With the current payment
methods for cancer care, small practices particularly in rural areas are being forced
out of business. It is estimated that two thirds of all these practices will either have to
merge or go out of business.
This year’s symposium has been designed to provide medical and nursing professionals
with objective data that will enable them to implement new evaluation tools in order
to effectively treat and manage individual cancer patients. It will also provide nurses
and other health care professionals the opportunity to learn how others are meeting
the challenge of both keeping up with the new cancer drugs and treatments as well as
how to provide value to their cancer patients
